A Dog’s Odyssey Our Dog Rules On Furniture:

Elissa

Updated: Jan 24

Hey there, Dog Parents!

Let’s dive into a topic that hits home for all of us: our furry companions and our precious furniture. What are our rules? Here’s the deal—it’s a firm no unless it’s a command! Let me share why keeping our dogs off the furniture is not just a choice; it’s a game changer!

1. Hygiene is Non-Negotiable

Let’s be real: our dogs love adventure. Just ask Odyssey! Her favourite pastime? Rolling around in dirt or, even worse, the occasional poop! We’ve got a robot vacuum that cleans up after them, but when I empty that dirty water? Ugh—it’s a nightmare! It smells like a dog park gone wrong!

And listen up: we’ve had clients who shared their beds with their dogs and ended up with pink eye—three times! Let’s protect our homes and our health!

2. Builds Confidence

Now, let’s talk boundaries. They are crucial. When dogs have free access to us, it can lead to entitlement and unhealthy dependency. What is separation anxiety? It's when a dog has unhealthy fear of not being by your side.

It might seem fine now, but what happens when you have to make a trip to the grocery store and no one is home to be home with the dog? Madness, panic attacks, stress they didn't need to have. You need find help. You become a prisoner.

Start setting those boundaries today. Your neighbours will thank! You will thank yourself later when you need to make room for a child who needs your attention!

3. Manners Make the Dog

Not every house has a dog, if you’re visiting friends and they’re not dog-friendly, it’s up to us to show that our dogs can be polite.

A few months ago, I was invited to a lunch party while Argos was recovering from surgery. I asked if I could bring him, and they said yes—reluctantly especially because they had some children at this lunch. To their surprise, I set up my own mat and kept him in one spot the whole time. They expected chaos, but instead, they saw a well-mannered dog who knew how to respect boundaries!

So When Do My Dogs Get to Go on Furniture?

Only when I tell them too.

When Do I Tell Them to?

When there’s a purpose—like putting on a collar or simply wanting a cuddle. They get invited with a clear “place” command.

And what does “place” mean? It’s straightforward: go there and stay there. They don’t leave until I give the release cue.

I hope these insights empower you and your families! Remember, you’re here for a reason. Bringing order to chaos can transform your home into a haven of peace. Let’s work together to turn that chaos into organized bliss!

Love,

A Dog's Odyssey
