Dog sprayed by skunk and doing at home remedy
Argos Covered in Baking Soda

Hi friends!

Hope you are having a great Sunday. We got sprayed by a skunk last Saturday wanted to share our experience so you can avoid our silly mistake, and learn together if you've been sprayed. How did this happen? Our dogs were off leashed, it was our last walk before bed. We saw our Malinois, Argos dart to something. We recalled. Argos came back to us smelling like a chemical bomb, and eye tearing. The high notes of the spray was so foreign, we made the mistake of bringing him inside to give him a bath. The skunk spray then oxidize expelling it's low notes and what we know as a skunk smell. Our whole house smelled like from then on. We tried the online recipe for a hydrogen peroxide solution but it didn't work. We did it multiple times. Even powdering him up with baking soda first, and still found an odour.

So what were we doing wrong?

  1. Coconut Oil first. The skunk spray is oil based. The reason why our groomer told us to powder him first with baking soda, so it can soak up the oil. But try this first because and oil mixes with other oils. Coconut oil has a pleasant fragance and can help strip the skunk juice.

  2. Use SPECIFICALLY DAWN DISH DETERGENT, other brands don't work.

  3. Don't bring them inside. When is doubt, leave them out.

But first how to avoid?

  1. Keep your dog on a leash.

  2. Survey area before off leashing.

  3. Make sure there are no bushes, trees, garbage cans blocking your view before you release your dogs.

  4. Walk on busy streets. Skunks are afraid of getting hit by cars and generally stay on busy streets.

It would have been nice to bring him to a groomer but it happened 12 AM and we still have yet to find him a groomer willing to work with him. Obviously, if your dog is not off leashed trained please do not off leash them. If you think your dog is off leashed trained, just simply ask if your recall it a 10/10? This article is published just to share our experience and share tips that would have helped us if we had access to them earlier. Thank you for reading, have a great Sunday.
